Borrowed Sorrow

Growing up, I spent most of my time alone. I spent it reading, playing pretend, writing short stories, dancing, and exploring. Of course, I had a crew: a bunch of busybody teenagers exploring the infinite possibilities of our hometown. When puberty hit, I fell in love with the idea of falling in love, but not the actual relationship part. I mostly read about romance in teen magazines and already felt exhausted by the obligations society threw at girls. Back in my day, being sad was a trend. I was there when the first emo punk bands debuted on MTV. I was there when Avril swapped her skateboard for a tutu. But personally, I was happy. So, I borrowed sorrow from pop culture instead. I picked up my brother’s beat-up guitar and learned to play the most heart-numbing songs. I was an emo girl. Sejak 2012, gue berulang kali mau nabung dollar. Tapi gue urungkan. Bukan karena ngga yakin dollar bakal naik. Justru karena gue yakin dollar pasti naik terhadap nilai tukar rupiah. Dan gue kepikir, kalau dollar naik, pasti berdampak pada ekonomi negara. Ekonomi orang-orang di sekitar gue. Bukan karena mereka pake dollar. Tapi karena pada skala makro, pertukaran komoditi masih menggunakan dollar. Dan mau ngga mau, melihat harga dollar yang tinggi, komoditas dalam negri pasti melirik pasar luar. Namanya juga bisnis, maunya untung. Didasari pemikiran kalau nabung dollar berasa ngga nasionalis, dan berbahagia di atas kesulitan sodara sebangsa dan setanah air, maka gue memilih invest di saham-saham plat merah. Tujuannya selain untuk investasi juga berkontribusi terhadap usaha milik bangsa. Namun lagi lagi. Ngga di mana-mana, cinta gue selalu bertepuk sebelah tangan. Late Night or Early Morning

The thing about grief: it doesn't end with its five phases or whatever. It stays. It eats you every day. You feel it in your chest. Your arms tremble. Yet, you can't cry. You are never allowed to cry. Not anymore. Not after an evil, ungrateful man saw your tears and exploited them. A thought in the late night or the very early morning. You feel the pain is fresh. You wonder why you were stabbed and left to die alone. Your hands seek a grasp. Nobody is around. We are always alone. And it's fine. We are always better off alone. Forgive yourself. Forgive me.
